# Samsung Printer Is The Next Frontier Of Minecraft Servers

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 18 upvotes · 4 comments

## Summary

A hacker known as vimpo dumped the firmware of a Samsung C410W printer (firmware V3.00.02.20, DEC-15-2015), found a UDP overflow exploit through debug serial ports, and used it to run his lightweight Minecraft server, UCraft, directly on the printer. The exploit and server code are both on GitHub, though they only work reliably on that exact printer model and firmware. He also tried enlisting an LLM to help find the exploit, which assisted with identifying functions in the firmware dump but ultimately required human effort and burned through millions of tokens. Notably, the printer can still function normally afterward, but using it while Minecraft is running crashes the server. This is the same person behind an earlier project running a Minecraft server on a WiFi light bulb.

## Questions this post answers

### How did someone get a Minecraft server running on a Samsung printer?

A hacker named vimpo opened a Samsung C410W printer to access its debug serial ports, dumped the firmware, and found a UDP buffer overflow exploit to gain code execution. He then installed his own lightweight Minecraft server, UCraft, on the device. The printer still works normally afterward but crashes the server if used while Minecraft is running.

_daily.dev surfaces offbeat hardware exploit writeups like this for developers who enjoy embedded hacking._

### Which Samsung printer model and firmware version was exploited to run Minecraft?

The exploit targets a Samsung C410W printer running firmware version V3.00.02.20 dated December 15, 2015. The exploit and the accompanying UCraft Minecraft server code are published on GitHub, but they are tied specifically to that printer and firmware version, so replicating the hack requires the exact same hardware.

> Hmm... If you think about it, it might actually have more sense... I mean, you could hack around a bit and add some functionality that will physically print out a map of the local area on demand. 😆

> Researchers should publish a packet capture and the exact firmware hash with the exploit so others can reproduce the UDP overflow without guessing which C410W image they have
