# Sandboxing LLM-Generated Code Needs a Different Threat Model

**[DigitalOcean Community](https://daily.dev/sources/do_community)** · 63 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Testing five sandbox isolation tiers against real LLM-generated code shows that accidental failures, not attacks, dominate the risk. Across 192 benign-prompt programs, the top failure was attempting a runtime package install (12.5%), not resource exhaustion (2.2%) or egress (0%). A separate study found 19.7% of LLM-recommended packages don't exist on PyPI or npm, and 43% of hallucinated names reproduce on every retry, creating a 'slopsquatting' risk. Testing default Docker through gVisor to Firecracker microVMs found five of six failure classes flat across tiers; only resource exhaustion moved, and it moved the wrong way for climbing tiers, while a microVM's p95 spin-up was 1,831ms, 9.8x a container's. No tier delivers cheap idle, intact state, and a clean per-session boundary simultaneously.

## Questions this post answers

### What percentage of LLM-recommended Python or npm packages don't actually exist?

About 19.7% of package mentions recommended by LLMs name a package that doesn't exist in PyPI or npm, based on a study generating 576,000 code samples across 16 models with 2.23 million package mentions. Commercial models hallucinated fabricated packages at 5.2% while open-source models did so at 21.7%, and 43% of hallucinated names reappeared on every one of ten repeated runs.

_Teams evaluating LLM coding tools can track supply-chain risks like package hallucination research on daily.dev._

### Does using a hardware-isolated microVM instead of a Docker container actually stop more failures from LLM-generated code?

No, testing across five isolation tiers (bare subprocess, default Docker, hardened Docker, gVisor, Firecracker microVM) found five of six accident failure classes were identical from default Docker up to the microVM. Only resource exhaustion containment changed, and it got slightly worse at higher tiers (gVisor and microVM contained 16.7% versus hardened Docker's 33.3%) because they lacked clear exit diagnostics.

_Developers deciding how much isolation their AI agent sandbox really needs can weigh benchmarks like these on daily.dev._

### How much startup latency does a Firecracker microVM add compared to a Docker container for sandboxing code execution?

A Firecracker microVM's p95 spin-up latency measured 1,831 milliseconds, compared to 186ms for default Docker and 189ms for hardened Docker, making the microVM about 9.8 times slower to start than a container. Despite this, at a median of four code executions per agent session, the cumulative extra latency per session stayed around 7 seconds total.

_Engineers weighing microVMs against containers for agent sandboxes can compare real spin-up numbers like these on daily.dev._
