# Sashiko: an AI code review tool for the Linux kernel

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Google engineers have released Sashiko, an AI-powered code review tool built for the Linux kernel and written in Rust. It monitors kernel mailing lists for new patch submissions and automatically provides feedback to maintainers. Powered primarily by Gemini Pro 3.1, it detected 53% of 1,000 recent upstream kernel bugs that human reviewers missed. The tool has expanded to the rust-for-linux mailing list and work is underway on Rust-specific prompts and Coccinelle-for-Rust integration. Google is covering token costs for the Linux Kernel Mailing List, and the project is moving under the Linux Foundation with open-source code on GitHub. Notably, Sashiko is positioned as a maintainer assistant rather than an autonomous patch submitter, making it less controversial in the open source community.

## Content

Google engineers have launched Sashiko, an AI-powered code review system built specifically for the Linux kernel. Written in Rust, it monitors kernel mailing lists for new patch submissions and automatically provides feedback to maintainers.

The tool is primarily powered by Gemini Pro 3.1, though it supports multiple LLMs. In testing against 1,000 recent upstream kernel bugs — all tagged with 'Fixes:' and all missed by human reviewers — Sashiko caught 53% of them. That's a meaningful number, even if it leaves plenty on the table.

Sashiko has recently expanded its coverage to the rust-for-linux mailing list. It's currently running without Rust-specific prompts, but contributors including Miguel Ojeda and Gary are working on tailored prompts and potential Coccinelle-for-Rust integration to improve review quality over time.

A few practical details worth knowing: the tool sends code to external LLM providers, and Google is covering the token costs for the Linux Kernel Mailing List. The project is being moved under the Linux Foundation, and the code is open-source on GitHub.

The framing matters here too. Sashiko is positioned as a tool to help maintainers, not as an AI submitting its own patches. That distinction has made it considerably less controversial in the open source community than AI code submission tools tend to be — it's an assistant, not a contributor trying to get commit credit.
