Blockchain scalability and interoperability are critical challenges for widespread adoption. Scalability involves handling high transaction volumes without compromising security or decentralization, measured by capacity, throughput, finality, and confirmation time. The blockchain trilemma suggests optimizing all three attributes (decentralization, security, scalability) simultaneously is difficult. Solutions include Layer 1 approaches (sharding, SegWit, consensus mechanisms like PoS and DPoS), Layer 2 solutions (sidechains, state channels, rollups, Plasma), and scalable distributed ledgers. Interoperability enables different blockchains to communicate and share data through bridges, cross-chain protocols, atomic swaps, and middleware solutions like Chainlink, creating a more connected ecosystem for decentralized applications.
