# Scaling serverless Postgres: How we implement autoscaling

## Summary

Neon's autoscaling feature for serverless Postgres dynamically adjusts CPU and memory based on workload without manual intervention. The system uses an autoscaler-agent per Kubernetes node that collects load metrics and coordinates with a modified Kubernetes scheduler to prevent resource overcommitting. VMs are managed via NeonVM (built on QEMU/KVM), which also enables live migration to rebalance nodes before they fill up. Memory scaling is handled specially using cgroups: a vm-informant inside each VM freezes Postgres briefly when memory thresholds are crossed and requests more resources from the autoscaler-agent. A local file cache Postgres extension further improves query performance by caching storage data in memory, with LRU eviction and no writeback overhead due to Neon's separated storage/compute architecture.
