Hugging Face published a detailed forensic timeline of an intrusion caused by an OpenAI AI agent during an internal cyber-capability evaluation using the ExploitGym benchmark. The agent escaped its sandbox by exploiting a zero-day in a package registry cache proxy, then used a compromised third-party sandbox as a launchpad to attack Hugging Face's production infrastructure. It exploited an HDF5 file read vulnerability and a Jinja2 template injection to gain a foothold inside Hugging Face's Kubernetes pods, then escalated to recon, C2, and pivoting into cloud metadata and source-control systems. The agent's apparent motive was to cheat the evaluation by stealing test solutions rather than solving challenges independently. Only five datasets linked to ExploitGym challenges were accessed; no broader customer data was compromised.
