# Scientists Observe Einstein’s Gravity in The Quantum World

## Summary

An international research team, including Nobel laureate Sir Roger Penrose, has directly measured for the first time how gravity affects the quantum phase of a freely falling atom. Using a new apparatus called the Quantum Galileo Interferometer, researchers at Ben-Gurion University split ultracold rubidium atoms into two quantum paths, holding one stationary via magnetic fields while letting the other fall freely, then recombined them to detect a phase difference. The measured phase matched predictions from applying Einstein's equivalence principle to quantum objects, confirming consistency between quantum mechanics and general relativity under the tested conditions. The experiment does not unify gravity and quantum theory nor prove gravity is quantum, but the technique could be extended to heavier objects like nanodiamonds to probe further questions about quantum superposition at large scales. The study was published in Science Advances.
