# Securely Useless

## Summary

A UK company's push to comply with the CyberEssentials security standard crippled its software development work. People were denied the right to install and run unapproved software, could not easily connect across networks, or attach hardware for testing, so a shadow network of unofficial PCs sprang up. Management eventually approved a second, less secure network to host dev, test, wikis and internal tools, keeping the 'core business' on the locked-down side. That protected core turned out to be just an outdated documentation share, while the 'secondary' network was about eight times larger and full of essential activity.
