The Rust Foundation has mandated hardware security keys for all critical infrastructure access, including crates.io. After evaluating vendors against FIDO2, WebAuthn, and PIV standards, they selected Yubico YubiKeys via the Secure It Forward grant program. All infra admins, engineers, and Rust Project members with infrastructure access are now required to use hardware keys. Keys were distributed in person at the 2026 Rust All Hands in Amsterdam. Future plans include hardware-backed SSH keys as default for infrastructure operations and hardware-backed certificates in the release process.
