# Self Hosting in 2026 | Is It Still Worth It?

**[The Linux Cast](https://daily.dev/sources/linuxcast)** · 15 min read · 28 upvotes · 3 comments

## Summary

Self-hosting becomes worthwhile when replacing multiple paid services rather than just one. The initial setup requires significant learning (Docker, networking, security) and patience, as benefits only materialize after building out your infrastructure. Hardware costs are minimal with used equipment, but the real investment is time and willingness to learn. Starting small with one service and expanding gradually is recommended, though the process can take 1-2 years before reaching a point where you can fully replace commercial alternatives like Spotify or Google services.

> Just for the fun of it is worth it. It started with gitlab a year ago and kept growing :P. Still pending to start with plex/jellyfin for the kids and saving the disney subscription.

> im not new in the IT world but not totally out, the first time i use docker was thanks to chaGPT and what you are saying is totally real if i want to do by my self, because thanks to ChatGPT i have succefully installed: Immich, Portainer, SpeedTest-Tracker, Nextcloud, AdGuard, Smoke-ping, Homer, Glances-Monitor, N8N, Uptime-Kuma, Homea-ssistant, cockpit and Cloudflare tunnel configured with a personal domain to access the N8N webhooks.
