# Sentry vs OpenTelemetry: You Don’t Need to Pick One

## Summary

You don't have to choose between Sentry and OpenTelemetry — they can work together in the same observability pipeline. If your backend already uses OpenTelemetry, you can send OTLP traces and logs to Sentry by pointing your OTLP exporter at Sentry's endpoint, with no SDK swap or instrumentation rewrite. The Sentry SDK handles the frontend (browser tracing, Session Replay, errors, source maps), while OpenTelemetry handles backend instrumentation. Two export paths are covered: direct OTLP to Sentry for simple single-service setups, and OpenTelemetry Collector forwarding for multi-service environments needing routing, batching, or multi-vendor evaluation. W3C traceparent propagation links frontend and backend into one connected distributed trace. A demo using React + Vite on the frontend and FastAPI + OTel on the backend illustrates the full architecture. Key limitation: Sentry's OTLP ingest currently supports traces and logs but not metrics, and backend error monitoring still requires the Sentry SDK.
