# Separating logic and language

**[MIT News](https://daily.dev/sources/mit)** · 6 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

MIT cognitive neuroscientists Evelina Fedorenko and Hope Kean have demonstrated that logical reasoning does not require language. Working with stroke patients who had severe language impairments, they found these individuals could solve logic puzzles as well as neurotypical controls. Brain imaging of healthy adults confirmed that language-processing regions are not activated during logical reasoning tasks — neither inductive nor deductive. The multiple demand network was engaged for inductive reasoning but not deductive reasoning. The findings challenge long-held theories linking symbolic thought to linguistic capacity, have implications for how society views aphasia, and raise questions about the architecture of AI systems like LLMs that rely entirely on language yet simulate reasoning.
