# Settling The Debate On Soldered Versus Crimped High-Current Connectors

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A practical high-current test comparing crimped versus soldered cable connections settles a long-standing debate. While soldered connections initially show lower resistance, crimped connections form a cold weld — a solid-state bond that blends metal surfaces together — making them far more durable under mechanical stress like vibration and impact. Testing with hundreds of amps shows soldered connectors failing and even unsoldering themselves from heat, while crimped connections hold. Industry standard favors crimping for good reason: cold welds are gas-free, don't rely on dissimilar intermetallic compounds, and tend to improve over time.
