# Shape-shifting mirrors on NASA’s new space telescope could unveil Jupiters like our own

**[MIT Technology Review](https://daily.dev/sources/technologyreview)** · 8 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, launching as early as next month, will carry the first space-based 'active coronagraph' — an instrument using two deformable mirrors with 2,304 tiny actuators each to cancel out unwanted starlight via active wavefront control. This system is expected to improve exoplanet detection sensitivity by up to 1,000x compared to current space coronagraphs, potentially enabling direct imaging of true Jupiter analogues orbiting sun-like stars. The technology could also pave the way for NASA's proposed Habitable Worlds Observatory, which aims to photograph Earth-like planets.
