# Shopify and Muse partner to bring agentic checkout to all Shopify stores

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Shopify is partnering with Muse to bring agentic checkout, powered by Shop Pay, to all Shopify stores. The integration lets shoppers using Muse discover and purchase products more seamlessly, while merchants gain access to a broader pool of buyers. Both companies describe it as mutually beneficial and expect additional partnerships to follow from Muse in the future.

## Content

## What happened

Meta and Shopify announced a partnership to wire Shop Pay into Muse, Meta's AI shopping agent. The integration goes to all eligible Shopify merchants automatically. Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke called it "agentic checkout" — Muse can now search, compare, and complete a purchase on any Shopify store without the buyer manually entering payment details.

Shopify also extended WebMCP support to checkout, giving browser-based AI agents three new tools: `get_checkout`, `update_checkout`, and `complete_checkout`. Agents can read and modify order details — address, delivery option, payment — and submit the order with buyer authorization, rather than scraping pages or taking screenshots. The Instinct agent announced a similar deal the same day.

For merchants, the setup is straightforward. Shopify already maintains a single product catalog that it shares with AI shopping tools like Muse and ChatGPT. Merchants update their products once; Shopify handles the connections to each AI service.

## Amazon went the other direction

While Shopify opened its checkout to agents, Amazon blocked Muse from browsing and buying on Amazon.com. The stated reasons: agents weren't disclosing their identity, and there were concerns about credential capture.

The legal backdrop matters here. A recent Ninth Circuit ruling weakened Amazon's options against agents like Perplexity's Comet, pushing enforcement toward infrastructure rather than courts. That's partly why a new identity standard — the IETF Web Bot Auth draft, built on HTTP Message Signatures — is gaining traction. It lets agents sign requests and publish public keys so platforms can verify who's operating the agent. Cloudflare and AWS WAF already support it.

The Amazon block and the Shopify partnership happening within days of each other isn't a coincidence. The fight is over who controls the last few milliseconds between a consumer deciding to buy and money actually moving.

## The revenue logic

Meta currently offers Muse free, with paid tiers at $20 and $100 per month. Subscriptions aren't really the point.

Consider the math: global ecommerce is roughly $6.4 trillion. If Muse eventually influences 1% of that volume, that's $64 billion in purchases flowing through the agent. A 1% transaction fee on that is $640 million a year — with no inventory, no warehouses, no logistics.

Meta doesn't need marketplace-level fees of 10–15% to make this work. At 0.5%, routing 5% of global ecommerce GMV ($325 billion) produces about $1.6 billion annually.

What makes this structurally interesting is that Meta already monetizes the moment *before* a transaction — merchants pay for ads on Instagram and Facebook to drive purchase intent. Muse gives Meta a path to also monetize the transaction itself. The same commercial intent could generate ad revenue on the way in and a transaction fee on the way out.

Shop Pay and Stripe Link are already wired into Muse checkout. PayPal has also moved to support it. The payment infrastructure is largely in place.

## What this means for platform teams

The Shopify-Amazon split is a useful forcing function. Platforms now have to decide — explicitly, not by default — whether to admit agent traffic, how to route it, and what authorization looks like. Signed agent identity (who operates the agent) is a separate question from shopper authorization (did the actual buyer approve this purchase). The emerging standards try to address both, but implementation is still early.

For small businesses on Facebook or Instagram, the practical upside is simpler: agentic checkout could become an out-of-the-box feature, no custom integration required.

## Questions this post answers

### How does Meta's Muse AI shopping agent handle checkout on Shopify stores?

Muse, Meta's AI shopping agent, can complete purchases directly through Shop Pay on Shopify stores without the shopper leaving the Muse experience to check out manually. The integration is automatic for Shopify merchants with no extra setup required, and it is available in countries where Muse is supported.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 22 comments across x (as of 2026-09-28).

**TL;DR:** Replies mostly buy into the 'toll booth' thesis that Meta could monetize agentic checkout via a small transaction fee, but many question whether it cannibalizes ad revenue, whether merchants/shoppers will accept it, and whether Amazon's exclusion undercuts the whole pitch.

**Sentiment:** 25% positive · 45% mixed · 30% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some see a small transaction fee as more honest and less annoying than another subscription.
- The shift from monetizing attention to monetizing completed transactions is seen as a smart, scalable play leveraging Meta's existing traffic.

**The pushback**

- If the agent completes the purchase itself, it may skip the ad impressions that fund Meta, cannibalizing its core business.
- Skeptics argue competitive price and quality, not merchant fees to Meta, will actually drive ecommerce traffic.
- Being blocked from Amazon undercuts the 'tax on all ecommerce' thesis since that's a major chunk of the market.
- Attribution and consent become harder for merchants when an agent compares and completes purchases on a shopper's behalf.
- One reply raises a security concern about the agent leaking its own filesystem before being trusted with checkout.

**By community**

- x (mixed): Replies engage seriously with the monetization math and 'toll booth' framing but split between believers in the transaction-fee thesis and skeptics worried about cannibalization, trust, and Amazon's exclusion.

**Hottest debate:** Whether a per-transaction fee is a durable new revenue stream or one that cannibalizes Meta's existing ad-driven business model.

**Open questions**

- Who actually keeps the transaction fee: Meta or the payment rails (Stripe Link, Shop Pay) the agent checks out through?
- Will shoppers still feel in control when an agent spends money on their behalf?
- How will platform gatekeepers like Apple and Google respond to agentic checkout?

**Highlights**

> @rohanpaul_ai If Muse closes the purchase itself it skips the ad impressions that fund Meta - the fee just cannibalizes its core.

> @rohanpaul_ai Becoming a tiny tax on global ecommerce is a great thesis, unless that ecommerce happens to be on Amazon, which blocked you. So basically, ecommerce minus Amazon.

> @rohanpaul_ai Not gonna be able to monetize. Competitive quality and price will drive ecomm traffic, not whether or not the merchant pays meta

> @rohanpaul_ai The math checks out Maybe fix the part where Muse leaked its own filesystem before handing it the global checkout button
> — [eforus\_overseer on x](https://x.com/eforus_overseer/status/2103829447417675918)

> @rohanpaul_ai Checked the math: 1% of $6.4T is $64B, and a 1% fee on that is $640M. Holds up. The open question is who keeps the fee: Meta, or the payment rails Muse already checks out through (Stripe Link, Shop Pay).
