The last remaining patent, BR PI0109962-0 held by Siemens AG and active only in Brazil, expired on July 19, 2026. VIA Licensing Alliance, which administered the pool of 30+ licensors including Canon, LG, Microsoft, Sony, and Toshiba, has already taken down the licensing program webpage. This means the per-unit royalties on MPEG-4 Visual encoders and decoders are no longer enforceable for patents in this pool, though patents outside the pool could theoretically still exist.
