# Single-maintainer open source is a ticking time bomb, and Booklore just detonated

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 3 min read · 9 upvotes · 5 comments

## Summary

Booklore, a popular self-hosted e-book library platform with over 10,000 GitHub stars, was abruptly deleted by its sole developer after community backlash on Reddit. The incident highlights the inherent risk of relying on single-maintainer open source projects, which can disappear overnight without warning. A community fork called Grimmory has emerged to fill the void, but rebuilding the ecosystem will take time. The key takeaway: when adopting self-hosted software, check how many active contributors a project has as a proxy for its long-term reliability.

> The guy behind Booklore may have suffered an AI psychosis. He started vibe coding slop at unhinged pace, stopped taking feedback and removed integrations, changed the license and trash talked community members with an inflated ego, deleted posts in the Discord server and used AI to write half-assed apologies but didn't even bother to remove parts of the response "here is how you can apologize..."

> Looks like the author made some questionable moves. But this is what happens when you tell the person running all the infrastructure that he "is not an author" and "owns nothing" - he proves otherwise.
> Still sad, though.

> At least there is Grimmory. It sucks that he was doing some of the stuff(I was not concerned really about the AI side, if it actually made the app great and added good functions) but everything else, that sucks.

> Good article! I would arg a bit differently regarding author's conclusion:

> > Whenever you incorporate self-hosted software that becomes an integral part of your stack, be sure to check how many people are actively contributing to gauge how stable it seems.

> Give tip, donations to these people if you think their work is valuable (1 coffee is already great!) Send them love and positive feedback too in the github issues! Tell them you use their tool. As ethical maintainer we are really blind... at most we know how many downloads. How many people join our discords and maybe once ask something...

Classic rug pull attempt, but it backfired massively and he didn’t handle it well at all. Everybody involved seems to agree he was being an absolute moron. Maybe life circumstances stressed him for money, I don’t know the guy, and it’s totally fair and okay for developers to make money on their projects but there is a way to monetization and this whole drama is just a stain on open source. It’s good we have forks.","datePublished":"2026-04-03T08:59:07.383Z","url":"https://daily.dev/posts/LsgiN9SMQ#c-JMKr5tfyX","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Maxx","url":"https://daily.dev/maxym","image":"https://media.daily.dev/image/upload/s--_XufsF_I--/f_auto/v1741599580/avatars/avatar_J12t3Jj2x"},"interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":{"@type":"LikeAction"},"userInteractionCount":4}},{"@type":"Comment","text":"Looks like the author made some questionable moves.
