Snap, YouTube, and TikTok have settled the first school district social media addiction lawsuit, a bellwether case brought by Breathitt County School District in Kentucky. Meta is now the sole defendant heading to trial on June 12. The case alleges social media companies designed addictive products that harmed youth mental health and forced schools to divert resources to counseling and crisis management. Meta has consistently chosen to fight rather than settle across multiple 2026 trials, including a March LA verdict where a jury found Meta and Google liable for addictive design, and a New Mexico case where Meta was ordered to pay $375 million. Bloomberg Intelligence estimates the collective theoretical liability across all related lawsuits could reach $400 billion. The litigation is frequently compared to the 1990s tobacco lawsuits in scale and potential industry impact.
