# Someone squeezed the Steam Deck's hardware into a custom Game Boy shell, and it looks amazing

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 2 min read · 2 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A maker called PhyFawkes has built the 'SteamBoy' by fitting a Steam Deck motherboard, battery, speakers, and buttons into a custom Game Boy-sized shell. The main challenge is driving a 1200x1080 VR AMOLED panel, which doesn't natively communicate with the Deck's motherboard and requires a custom adapter PCB — for now, the device outputs to a TV. Cooling is handled by a 3D-printed mount for a 30x7mm fan and heatsink, and a -50mV CPU/GPU undervolt keeps temperatures around 70–80°C during gaming.

## Questions this post answers

### What cooling solution is used when fitting a Steam Deck motherboard into a compact custom shell?

A 30x7mm fan and heatsink with a 3D-printed mount, combined with a -50mV CPU and GPU undervolt, keeps temperatures around 70°C during lighter games like Tunic and around 80°C in more demanding titles like Clair Obscur.
