# Soundcell Uses Graphene Drums to Spot Superbugs

## Summary

Researchers at TU Delft and spinoff SoundCell have developed graphene nanodrums — drumheads made from two graphene sheets stretched over an 8-micrometer cavity — that can identify bacterial species by analyzing the acoustic patterns of their physical movements. A single bacterium placed on the drum vibrates the graphene surface, and those vibrations are captured via laser reflection and converted into time-frequency spectrograms. Two machine learning models trained on spectrograms from E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae achieved ~87–88% classification accuracy. Beyond species identification, the technology can detect antibiotic resistance in as little as one hour — far faster than conventional multi-day lab tests. SoundCell has already deployed a compact version of the device at two hospitals in the Netherlands for clinical validation.
