Attackers exploited a lost femtocell base station containing a valid authentication certificate, creating a rogue device that intercepted cellular traffic and captured personal data including IMSI/IMEI numbers and SMS authentication codes used for mobile payments. The breach exposed data of 16,647 subscribers and enabled fraudulent payments for at least 368 customers. Separately, PIPC found 38 KT servers had been infected with BPFDoor malware — a stealthy Linux backdoor linked to the China-nexus Red Menshen espionage group — since March 2024, which KT failed to report and later deleted logs from compromised servers. KT was ordered to strengthen femtocell security controls, expand ISMS-P certification, and improve governance.
