# Spacelift vs Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs)

## Summary

Spacelift is an infrastructure orchestration platform that compares to custom Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) built on frameworks like Backstage or Port. Key differences include Spacelift's built-in IaC integrations (Terraform, OpenTofu, Pulumi, CloudFormation, Ansible, Kubernetes), automated GitOps workflows, OPA-based governance and RBAC, automatic drift detection and remediation, and enterprise scalability without requiring a dedicated platform team to build and maintain it. IDPs offer broader scope covering non-infrastructure workflows like service catalogs, onboarding, and on-call rotations, but require significant engineering investment. The two are not mutually exclusive — many teams use Spacelift as the infrastructure layer behind a broader IDP.
