# SPF Record Syntax: Mechanisms, Qualifiers, Modifiers, and Macros

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 18 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A comprehensive reference for SPF record syntax based on RFC 7208, covering all eight mechanisms (all, include, a, mx, ptr, ip4, ip6, exists), four qualifiers (+, -, ~, ?), both modifiers (redirect= and exp=), and the full macro table with all eleven macro letters. Explains evaluation order (first-match-wins), the 10-DNS-lookup limit and void-lookup cap, record placement rules (one TXT record only, 255-byte string limit vs. record limit), and annotated real-world examples from Google, Microsoft 365, and Salesforce. Also documents the most common syntax mistakes with frequency data from a peer-reviewed 2023 study.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 16 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-08-03).

**TL;DR:** The HN thread is mostly skeptical about whether the post is AI-generated, with some debate about its utility versus just reading RFC 7208 directly, though a few commenters defend it as a useful condensed reference.

**Sentiment:** 30% positive · 50% mixed · 20% skeptical

**The case for**

- One commenter notes it's a 25-minute read compared to 1hr+ for the full RFC, making it a practical shortcut.
- A commenter with direct historical involvement in SPF (eBay/PayPal) vouches for the format's flexibility and straightforwardness.
- DNSControl is mentioned as a useful tool for automating SPF flattening, adding practical value to the discussion.

**The pushback**

- Multiple commenters suspect the post is AI-generated based on its opening phrasing and visual design choices.
- One commenter suggests readers would be better served going directly to RFC 7208 instead.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): The thread is split between suspicion of AI authorship and acknowledgment that the post serves a legitimate condensed-reference purpose.

**Hottest debate:** Whether the post is AI-generated and whether that matters for a technical reference document.

**Open questions**

- Does AI-generated technical documentation provide sufficient value compared to reading the original RFC directly?

**Highlights**

> I'm sorry this page needs to exist, it's partly my fault. I created the first "large scale" SPF record (for eBay and PayPal), and agreed that this was the best way to do it. I guess the people after me agreed too, because 20 years later it's still pretty much the same shape as when I made it! But I don't have any regrets, the format was pretty straightforward and offered a lot of flexibility. The biggest issue was the parsing libraries handling all of the "include" statements correctly.

> If that’s what you want, you would be better served by RFC 7208: <https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/rfc7208/>

> That’s obvious. But a genuine question: why does it matter? This seems to be a detailed reference document for a very technical purpose (and SEO juice for the company I guess).

> True. It's a 25 minute read instead of 1hr+
