Spotify removed over 57,000 fake podcast episodes and banned 3,500 accounts linked to illegal drug sales following a US Senate investigation led by Senator Maggie Hassan. The episodes used AI-generated audio to direct listeners to unregulated marketplaces selling opioids, modafinil, and cryptocurrency. Critically, Spotify only acted after CNN published an investigation in May 2025 — in all of 2024, only 87 accounts were actioned for similar violations. Spotify's own data shows 94% of removed episodes had zero plays, meaning the content functioned primarily as SEO vectors rather than listenable audio. The company admitted it is 'not particularly well-positioned' to detect AI-created podcast content and has no podcast-specific automated moderation system, despite having deployed AI detection tools on the music side. Spotify also did not report any of the removed content to law enforcement. The enforcement pattern — reactive and media-driven — raises broader questions about what illicit content remains undetected across the platform's five million-plus podcast titles.
