The publisher's stock surged as much as 8.3 percent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange following the report. Activist investor 3D Investment Partners, which holds roughly 18.5 percent of Square Enix shares and has previously pushed for strategy changes, is believed to have sparked the speculation. The company has spent the past four years restructuring, including selling Western studios to Embracer Group in 2022 and laying off over 100 US/UK staff in 2025.
