Cartesian, an MIT spinout founded in 2023, uses RFID wireless signals and machine-learning algorithms to provide real-time indoor item localization for retail stores. The platform integrates with existing handheld RFID readers and inventory apps, generating maps of where items are located across stockrooms and shop floors. Already deployed in 700+ stores across 15 countries and partnered with Inditex (ZARA's parent company), Cartesian claims to address a $15 billion inventory management problem in the U.S. The system runs entirely on existing hardware, can onboard a new store in about one minute, and plans to expand into manufacturing, warehouses, and robotics.
