# Stop Treating AI Like a Search Engine

**[Darshan Raval](https://daily.dev/sources/i-fgo_ret)** · [@darshanraval](https://daily.dev/darshanraval) · 1 min read · 56 upvotes · 22 comments

## Summary

A short opinion piece arguing that developers should treat AI as a collaborative teammate rather than a search engine. The author outlines a workflow where AI assists with architecture brainstorming, code review, debugging, test generation, documentation, and design critique. The core claim is that better conversations with AI yield more productivity gains than better prompts alone.

## Content

For a long time, I used AI like Google.

I'd ask one question, get one answer, and move on.

Then I changed one thing.

I started treating AI like a teammate instead of a tool.

Now my workflow looks like this:

✅ Brainstorm architecture
✅ Review code before PRs
✅ Debug tricky errors
✅ Generate test cases
✅ Improve documentation
✅ Challenge my design decisions

The biggest productivity boost didn't come from better prompts.

It came from having better conversations.

AI isn't replacing developers.

It's helping developers spend less time on repetitive work and more time solving real problems.

**How are you using AI in your daily development workflow?**

> Very true. Choosing what to ask and till what is key in the optional use of AI.

> However I feel people are getting more lazier as the time pass, instead of searching for information in google or in website they find it pretty easier to directly ask to AI and get the information on the same page.

> The framing that helped me: a search engine returns sources, an LLM returns a shape. If you ask it something you cannot verify, you have no way to tell a correct answer from a fluent one. So I use it where verification is cheap - code that runs, tests that fail, a schema I can diff - and I go back to primary sources when the cost of being confidently wrong is high. That distinction matters far more than prompt tricks.
