# Study Deepens Understanding of Quantum Transport in Topological Materials

## Summary

Researchers from the University of São Paulo, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the University of Washington observed anomalous quantum oscillations in the topological insulator zirconium pentatelluride (ZrTe₅) that persist beyond the quantum limit under magnetic fields up to 60 tesla and temperatures near 0.7 kelvin. The team attributes this to 'reentrant Landau levels' arising from the interplay of electron spin, orbital motion, and strong spin-orbit coupling, rather than many-body electron interactions. A single-particle model based on a three-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian reproduced the observed behavior, helping resolve prior contradictory reports about ZrTe₅ oscillations by showing that carrier density and Fermi-surface size determine which pattern appears. The findings position ZrTe₅ as a platform for exploring further exotic topological phases, including those tied to Weyl quasiparticles.
