# System design interviews aren't just about drawing boxes and databases; they test how you lead technical discussions.

## Summary

System design interviews test your ability to lead technical discussions, not just draw architecture diagrams. Three key strategies: own the agenda by outlining a roadmap in the first two minutes, pause and check in after proposing trade-offs rather than monologuing, and treat the interviewer as a collaborative teammate by acknowledging and adapting to their feedback rather than defending your initial design.

**System design interviews aren't just about drawing boxes and databases; they test how you lead technical discussions.**

Too many candidates fall into two traps: **talking non-stop** without checking in, or **waiting passively** to be led. Here is how to hit the sweet spot:

---

### 1. Own the Agenda Early

Start by framing the conversation. Outline a high-level roadmap within the first two minutes:

> _"I plan to clarify scale, sketch a core data flow, and then dive into caching and sharding. Does that alignment work for you?"_

This shows leadership while keeping the interviewer in control.

---

### 2. Pause & Check In

Don't deliver a monologue. After proposing a trade-off (e.g., SQL vs. NoSQL), pause purposefully:

> _"I’m leaning toward DynamoDB here to handle peak write volume. Before I lay out the schema, any concerns with that choice?"_

---

### 3. Treat the Interviewer as a Teammate

Frame the session as two staff engineers whiteboarding on day one. When they give feedback, acknowledge it instantly rather than defending your initial draft:

- Validate their point.
- Adapt the architecture out loud.
