Taiwan's Keelung District Prosecutors Office raided Super Micro Computer's local office and two affiliated companies — Chief Telecom and Albatron Technology — as part of an expanding criminal investigation into the smuggling of Nvidia AI chips to China. The probe began in May when three individuals, including Super Micro co-founder Wally Liaw, were detained for allegedly using forged documents to export Nvidia-equipped servers. The broader scheme is valued at roughly $2.5 billion by US prosecutors, who charged Liaw in March with conspiring to divert servers through a Southeast Asian front company. Super Micro shares fell over 9% on the news. Taiwan is now considering criminalizing AI chip exports to China outright, as current charges rely on document forgery laws. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has warned that data centres built with diverted chips are a dead end due to lack of support.
