Key changes include an opt-in feature model that makes features tree-shakable (starting at ~5kb for minimal tables), state management rebuilt on TanStack Store with fine-grained re-render control via subscriptions, lower memory usage at scale, and a cleaner plugin model. TypeScript enforces feature registration, so APIs like `setSorting` only exist once their feature is registered. Migration is gradual, with a `useLegacyTable` hook and `stockFeatures` import for backward compatibility. The rewrite was partly triggered by the React Compiler becoming stable, which broke V8's patterns.
