# Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A Tesla Semi caught fire on I-880 in Hayward, California, with no crash involved. The battery burned long enough to shut the southbound freeway for about 10 hours, from 5:35 p.m. Tuesday until 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. The driver got out unhurt and told officers they didn't know why the truck caught fire. This is the second Semi fire to close a California interstate in about two years, after an August 2024 crash-related fire on I-80 that the NTSB investigated. Tesla's launch customer PepsiCo had about 86 trucks as of 2024, and volume production only started a few months ago, making this fire a significant data point for a small fleet.

## Questions this post answers

### Did the Tesla Semi that caught fire on I-880 crash into anything?

No, there was no crash. The driver told officers the truck caught fire and they didn't know why, and no other vehicles were involved. The fire broke out around 5:35 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Route 92 in Hayward, California, and closed the freeway for about 10 hours.

### How does the Tesla Semi I-880 fire compare to the 2024 Tesla Semi fire on I-80?

The 2024 fire followed a crash: the truck left the road on a curve near Emigrant Gap, hit a delineator post and a tree, and the battery ignited after impact, per the NTSB. The 2026 Hayward fire on I-880 had no crash at all, shifting suspicion toward the battery pack, high-voltage system, or drive units themselves rather than impact damage.

### How often do large trucks catch fire compared to electric trucks like the Tesla Semi?

US fire departments responded to an average of 15,462 large-truck fires per year between 2018 and 2022, about 42 a day, in a fleet that is overwhelmingly diesel, with mechanical failure a factor in 44% of cases and only about 2% tied to collisions. Tesla claims one fire per 140 million miles for its vehicles, though with Semi deliveries still small, a single no-crash fire is a bigger data point.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 153 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-10-28).

**TL;DR:** Discussion centers on the technical risks of lithium battery fires (long burn times, toxic fumes, difficulty extinguishing) versus diesel fires, alongside debate over whether a 10-hour highway closure from a small fleet's second fire in two years is a meaningful safety signal or just media bias against Tesla.

**Sentiment:** 10% positive · 35% mixed · 55% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some argue per-mile and per-vehicle-mile statistics suggest EVs have a lower fire risk than diesel or gasoline vehicles overall.
- A few note gasoline/diesel trucks catch fire far more often in absolute terms, making a single incident statistically less alarming.

**The pushback**

- Lithium battery fires burn extremely hot (up to ~1000°C), can melt asphalt, and release highly toxic gases like hydrogen fluoride.
- Battery fires can't be extinguished and must be allowed to burn out, unlike diesel fires which can be put out faster.
- With a fleet of only ~86-200 trucks, a second fire in two years represents a much higher incident rate than for larger diesel truck fleets.
- Concern that local governments and first responders bear disproportionate, under-resourced costs training for and handling these novel battery fire events, while benefits accrue mostly to the manufacturer.
- Some see unfairness in experimental vehicles closing public highways for hours without compensation to affected drivers.

**By community**

- hackernews (heated): A long, technical back-and-forth over lithium vs. diesel fire danger and statistics dominates, interwoven with sharp disagreement about whether Tesla coverage reflects media bias or genuine safety concern.

**Hottest debate:** Whether this incident is a statistically meaningful safety red flag for a tiny fleet or an overblown story driven by anti-Tesla media bias.

**Open questions**

- What actually caused this fire given no crash occurred?
- Will the NTSB investigation be independent and thorough given political sensitivities around Tesla/Musk?
- Are EV truck fires actually more or less frequent per mile than diesel truck fires once more data accumulates?

**Highlights**

> I think you misread. The article state tesla Semi has had 2 fire in 2 years. The first one because the truck hist stuff and left the road in Nevada, the second (this one, the subject of the article) in California for unknown reasons. This is relevant because the Tesla semi fleet is small (86 vehicles 2 years ago, probably below 500 atm) and because battery fire are hard to stop, so we want to know what caused it. If EV fire last 10 time longer than diesel fire, but happen 10 time less often (we need more studies but it seems this is the initial consensus), this is not really an issue, but if they happen more often, we _need_ to know why and fix it. Also i don't want trucks to catch fire everytime they hit a cow or a boar, the roads around where i used to live would be consistently closed :/

> As the article points out, the fleet size of Tesla Semis is very small. And as this is the 2nd Tesla semi fire, this represents a much larger share of these trucks, than any single Mack Truck fire. If Mack trucks caught fire at these rates it may well make the news.

> I worked at a "Semi" OEM where we were doing work on battery, hydrogen powered, etc. development as part of the SuperTruck effort and these events are what kept us up at night. Really glad the driver was able to get out. I suspect that we're going to socialize the costs for getting first responders prepared (in so much as we actually do try to get them prepared) for these type of events. As a concept, that's fine but it leaves a really bad taste in the mouth when you're doing that to the benefit of an actor like Tesla.

> This is the second one of these to have blown up. It looks like about 200 exist. It is _notable_ that 1% of the entire installed base has caught fire.

> > I'll be interested to read the final safety reports Are you still confident that the final reports will be free of interference and the agency investigating anything Tesla (Musk) related won't be gutted before it gets the chance to issue anything damaging?
