# TetraMem memristor survives 700 degrees Celsius as startup moves AI inference chips to production wafers

USC researchers have built a memristor that operates reliably at 700°C — hotter than molten lava and beyond Venus surface temperatures — using a tungsten/hafnium-oxide/graphene stack where graphene prevents electrode short-circuiting. The device held data for 50+ hours at that temperature, survived over a billion switching cycles, and ran on 1.5V. TetraMem, the startup commercializing the technology, has moved its room-temperature AI inference chips to 300mm production wafers via NY CREATES with SK hynix and CHIPS Act support. Memristors perform matrix multiplication physically via Ohm's Law, enabling in-memory computing that eliminates the von Neumann bottleneck and promises orders-of-magnitude better energy efficiency than GPU-based AI inference. The high-temperature variant opens possibilities for computing in extreme environments like Venus landers, geothermal drilling, and nuclear reactors.
