# Text Shadow Support in Global Styles

**[Make WordPress Core](https://daily.dev/sources/wordpresscore)** · 3 min read · 10 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

WordPress 7.1 adds support for the CSS text-shadow property in Global Styles via theme.json. Theme authors can now declare a textShadow value under styles.typography to apply shadows globally, per block, or on elements like links including hover states — no custom CSS or plugin required. This is a first step; UI controls, presets, and per-block-instance support are planned for the next release. The change is fully backwards compatible and additive.

## Questions this post answers

### How do I set a text-shadow in WordPress theme.json?

Add a textShadow property under styles.typography (or under a specific block's typography, or under styles.elements for elements like link) with any valid CSS text-shadow value, including comma-separated multiple shadows. This works starting in WordPress 7.1. Block-level values override the global value using the same cascade as other typography styles, and there is no editor UI for it yet, so it must be set directly in the JSON file.

### Does WordPress support a text shadow block editor control yet?

No, WordPress 7.1 only supports declaring text-shadow through theme.json; there is no block inspector control or Global Styles UI for it in this release. A dedicated control on individual blocks, presets browsable in Global Styles, and a supports.typography.textShadow block support enabled first on Paragraph and Heading blocks are planned for the next release.

_Following incremental feature rollouts like this helps theme builders plan ahead on daily.dev._
