The 5 Levels of an AI-Ready Design System

This title could be clearer and more informative.Try out Clickbait Shieldfor free (5 uses left this month).

A five-level maturity model for evaluating how AI-ready a design system is, ranging from ad hoc Figma files to fully agentic systems where AI can ship UI without human review. The key insight is that AI amplifies existing system quality — loose systems produce drift faster. Most teams sit at Level 2 (Cataloged) or Level 3 (Structured), and the highest-value move is reaching Level 4 (Validated), where rules are enforced in CI and documentation is schema-driven so agents can parse it. Practical tooling layers discussed include design.md context files, agents.md routing files, design linters, and MCPs that connect design tokens to real component APIs.
