# The Atom Shutdown

## Summary

GitHub, the company (now owned by Microsoft) behind Atom, announced the “sunsetting” of Atom today. “Atom has not had significant feature development for the past several years,” the company said. As a result, we’ve decided to sunset Atom so we can focus on enhancing the developer experience in the cloud.

> This does not surprise me as Microsoft makes VSCode and the new Codespaces. If others want to continue Atom, they will have to use an opensource support project to continue with its development. 😞

> i remember using atom once and uninstalling it because i didn't want to turn my mac into a stove (although it would have been cool to like heat up a slice of ham or something)
