**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Linux 7.2, expected on August 16, brings Cache Aware Scheduling for systems with multiple last-level cache domains, continued AMD Zen 6 support following the EPYC 9006 Venice launch, and initial (default-disabled) AMDGPU HDMI 2.1 FRL support along with a merged DC power module. Other highlights include the ISP4 driver for webcams on HP ZBook Ultra G1a and upcoming AMD Ryzen laptops, initial basic Apple M3 boot support, Intel Panther Lake R and Diamond Rapids/Nova Lake H prep, an MGLRU improvement benefiting MongoDB, WiFi 8 preparations, and the new Intel-developed USB4STREAM protocol. Several old drivers, including Hercules Monochrome ISA graphics and the Profibus driver, are removed, and AF_ALG is deprecated.

## Questions this post answers

### What new scheduling feature is coming in Linux kernel 7.2?

Linux 7.2 introduces Cache Aware Scheduling, which benefits systems with multiple last-level cache (LLC) domains by improving task placement relative to cache locality. It has shown notable performance benefits in prior benchmarks for certain workloads and is considered one of the most exciting additions in this kernel version, expected to release August 16.

_Track kernel scheduler changes like this as you plan upgrades, right on daily.dev._

### Does Linux 7.2 support AMDGPU HDMI 2.1 FRL?

Yes, Linux 7.2 adds initial AMDGPU HDMI 2.1 Fixed Rate Link (FRL) support, but it is disabled by default in this release. Other HDMI 2.1 features such as VRR and ALLM did not make it into this kernel version. The AMDGPU driver also merged a DC power module to better match Radeon graphics power behavior.

_Follow AMDGPU driver progress on daily.dev before betting on HDMI 2.1 feature support._

### Does Linux 7.2 support Apple M3 chips?

Linux 7.2 adds initial, very basic support for Apple M3 devices, sufficient only for booting to a console and little more. Support for M3 Pro, Max, and Ultra variants is not included and is planned for Linux 7.3 instead, meaning mainline Linux compatibility with these Macs remains limited for now.

_Check daily.dev for kernel updates before relying on Apple M3 Linux support._
