Upgrading a home lab from a mid-tower to a Fractal Define 7 XL full-tower case delivered major improvements in drive cooling, noise levels, and future expandability. Enterprise SAS drives (Dell-badged Seagate Exos 7E8) that previously hit 55–60°C now stay below 41°C thanks to direct front-intake airflow from 140mm fans. The larger chassis also provides sound dampening on side panels, vibration-dampening drive trays, and room for up to 18 x 3.5" drives, larger motherboards (up to SSI-EEB), additional HBAs, and GPUs. While a case upgrade doesn't add raw compute or storage capacity, it creates the physical foundation for all future upgrades.
