“Balancing Sustainable Computing and Computing for Sustainability,” a new Communications of the ACM (CACM) opinion article, asks us to look at the issue of sustainability in computing research from two complementary perspectives: sustainable computing and computing for sustainability. The article was instigated and authored by a group of Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council Members passionate about the topic, who brought together experts across disciplines to explore how computing can both mitigate its effects on the environment and support sustainability work. Computing Community Consortium

A Computing Community Consortium (CCC) task force authored a new Communications of the ACM opinion piece, 'Balancing Sustainable Computing and Computing for Sustainability,' distinguishing between reducing computing's environmental footprint and using computing to solve sustainability challenges. The piece grew out of CCC-funded panels at SC24 and AAAS 2025, and involved authors from institutions including Caltech, UC Santa Barbara, and Google. A related CCC Community Chat webinar with the authors is scheduled for October 8, 2026.
