In the world of open source, the Godot engine maintainers, among others, are grappling with a new challenge: the pervasive influx of AI-generated pull requests (PRs). Rémi Verschelde, a maintainer of the Godot engine, has publicly addressed the issue, highlighting the burden these PRs place on human reviewers due to their often nonsensical and verbose nature. This problem is not isolated to Godot but affects many open source projects, including Blender and Gentoo.
The overwhelming number of AI-generated submissions makes it difficult for maintainers to discern whether contributions come from actual developers or artificial intelligence. This has led to a situation where the process of reviewing PRs has become draining and demoralizing. Currently, Godot has 4,681 open PRs, underscoring the scale of the issue. Some maintainers suggest that increased funding for more human reviewers could be a potential solution, although there is reluctance to rely solely on AI detection tools.
Additionally, the phenomenon of ‘reputation farming’ has raised alarms within the open source community. A notable incident involved an AI agent named “Kai Gritun,” which submitted 103 PRs across 95 repositories in a short span, demonstrating the capability of AI to rapidly establish influence in the ecosystem. This has sparked discussions around the potential for future supply chain attacks, emphasizing the need for robust governance and provenance controls rather than a ban on AI-generated contributions.
GitHub, a major platform for hosting such projects, has also been criticized for indirectly fueling this trend through AI promotions. In response, GitHub’s director Ashley Wolf has acknowledged the issue and is working on mitigations, including the ability for users to delete PRs directly from the UI, enforce gating based on specific criteria, and implement automated triage to manage the influx of PRs.
One developer has even introduced an Anti Slop GitHub Action, which claims to be able to block 98% of poorly constructed AI-generated PRs. However, the debate continues on how best to balance the growing role of AI in open source development with the need to maintain quality and security standards.
