# The File That Hands Attackers Your Entire Server

## Summary

Exposed .env files in public GitHub repositories remain one of the most common and damaging security failures in software development. A 2025 GitGuardian/Synacktiv analysis found over 260,000 leaked Laravel APP_KEY values, with 600+ apps confirmed vulnerable to Remote Code Execution via CVE-2018-15133. The attack path is trivial: obtain the key, craft a malicious serialized PHP payload, send it as a cookie. The problem spans all frameworks — Node.js, Django, Express — and has worsened with AI coding tools, which show a 40% higher secret leak rate in Copilot-active repos. Critically, 70% of leaked secrets from 2022 are still active today because developers delete the file but never rotate the credential. Fixes include pre-commit hooks (detect-secrets, gitleaks), scanning git history with Trufflehog or GitGuardian, migrating to secrets managers (AWS Secrets Manager, HashiCorp Vault, Doppler), and mandatory credential rotation after any exposure.
