The First Principle

Leadership is fundamentally an act of storytelling. Drawing on MLK's improvised 'I Have a Dream' passage, the argument is that story is not a technique but the first principle underlying all art forms — painting, music, architecture — because the human brain is wired to think in narrative. Leaders who only manage tasks miss this: meaning travels in stories. Whether it's Apple's 1984 ad, Shackleton's expedition, or Starbucks' turnaround, the story precedes and shapes the work. Leaders are always curating a narrative whether they intend to or not; if they don't author it, their teams will — and the result is politics. The practical challenge: know the story your team is actually telling itself, and be ready to set the prepared text aside and tell them about the dream.
