# The internet has a Strait of Hormuz problem

## Summary

A new report by the International Advisory Body on Submarine Cable Resilience warns that subsea cable chokepoints pose systemic risk to global internet connectivity. Key bottlenecks include the Bab el-Mandeb Strait (17+ cables, 17-20% of global traffic in a 23km-wide channel) and the Suez corridor (90% of Europe-Asia communications). Economics lock operators into vulnerable routes — established corridors are 15-30% cheaper to build along. Deliberate sabotage is increasingly a real threat, with Baltic Sea incidents linked to Russia and China, and Taiwan's first conviction of a Chinese captain for cable sabotage. Climate change adds further risk via storm surges and submarine landslides. Africa is particularly exposed, with only one repair ship covering sub-Saharan connectivity. The 2022 Tonga cable cut caused 61 days of near-total isolation and losses equal to 38.7% of GDP. The report urges action before a catastrophic 'Hormuz moment' forces the issue.
