# The LLM Memory Wall: Why Serving AI Is a RAM Problem, Not a GPU Problem

## Summary

In mid-2026, the real bottleneck for AI serving isn't GPU compute — it's memory. DRAM prices have surged ~90% in a quarter, major manufacturers are sold out through the year, and Intel's CEO doesn't expect relief before 2028. The core insight is that LLM inference is memory bandwidth- and capacity-bound, not compute-bound: a high-end GPU spends most of its time waiting for data, not computing. A 12-line Python KV-cache calculator (run against real Llama/Qwen configs) shows how many gigabytes a single long conversation actually consumes. Five practical levers for fighting the memory wall are covered, along with why Apple Silicon Macs — with their unified memory architecture — are surprisingly effective inference machines.

## Content

July 2026: the scarcest thing in AI isn't GPUs — it's the memory around them. DRAM +~90% in a quarter, big three makers effectively sold out through the year, Intel's CEO says relief maybe not before 2028.

That's the memory wall in your electronics bill, and it exposes what most engineers get backwards: LLM serving is bandwidth/capacity-bound, not compute-bound. A top-end GPU spends most of a generation _waiting_.

Includes a 12-line Python KV-cache calculator run against real Llama/Qwen config files (how many GB one long conversation actually costs), the five levers that fight the wall, and why a Mac is quietly a great inference box. 🔗

> The KV cache math at 128k context is the thing that surprises people the most — one long conversation is genuinely expensive in GB. What are you all doing about it: quantized KV, paged attention/vLLM, shorter contexts, MQA/GQA models? Curious what's actually holding up in production.
