# The next big thing in hydrogen could be underground

**[MIT Technology Review](https://daily.dev/sources/technologyreview)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Naturally occurring underground hydrogen gas, known as geologic hydrogen, is emerging as a potentially cheaper alternative to electrolyzer-based or carbon-capture clean hydrogen production. Companies like HyTerra and Koloma are prospecting for natural hydrogen deposits in regions such as the Midcontinent Rift spanning Kansas to Michigan, with HyTerra finding gas samples up to 96% hydrogen concentration. Other firms, including Vema Hydrogen and Eden GeoPower, are pursuing 'stimulated' geologic hydrogen by injecting water and catalysts into subsurface rocks to trigger hydrogen-producing reactions, with Vema aiming for full-scale production by 2028. Significant challenges remain around how much hydrogen can actually be captured and how to store and transport the notoriously difficult gas.
