A reflection on how skill acquisition happens in discrete jumps rather than continuously — what the author calls 'phase changes'. Drawing from personal running experience and professional work teaching formal methods, two questions are explored: can we accelerate phase changes, and can we better motivate people to persist until they occur? The latter proves more actionable, through reducing friction (better tooling, pairing on tasks) and lowering the effort barrier to practice.
