The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) has released a report outlining a roadmap for non-military drone infrastructure by 2035. It identifies twelve key technical challenges including scaling to millions of drones, AI autonomy, edge-cloud coordination, security, and workforce development. For researchers, the report calls for breaking disciplinary silos between robotics, networking, AI, and security communities, engaging with real-world deployments, and sharing datasets. Key computing milestones include simulation-to-reality pipelines, integration testbeds, scalable drone entity tracking, and real-time autonomy frameworks. The report was informed by a December 2025 workshop convening 47 cross-sector experts supported by NSF and IEEE.
