# The Resource Project: Tell R How Much Memory You Need

**[R-bloggers](https://daily.dev/sources/rbloggers)** · 14 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

R currently has no built-in mechanism for declaring memory requirements before a function runs, leading to cryptic OOM errors or silent process kills. The Resource Project proposes a new `resources()` pipe-based syntax for R that lets callers or function authors declare memory needs upfront, enabling fast-fail checks before computation begins. The proposal covers sequential calls, batch lapply patterns, and parallel execution via the Futureverse ecosystem. When combined with `futurize()`, declared memory specs can also drive scheduling decisions — limiting concurrent parallel tasks on a single machine or translating requirements into HPC job scheduler directives like Slurm's `--mem`. Most features are experimental and not yet implemented, with the exception of `futurize()` which is already on CRAN.

## Questions this post answers

### Why does cv.glmnet in R fail with 'cannot allocate vector' even when my matrix fits in memory?

cv.glmnet() needs roughly 3–4 times the memory of the input matrix x in addition to x itself during execution. For a 1.9 GiB design matrix, that means approximately 7.5 GiB of additional memory is required. The function gives no upfront warning about this, so the error only surfaces after computation is already underway, often after significant time has been wasted.

### How can I limit parallel workers in R based on available memory rather than CPU count?

Use parallelly::availableCores() with a custom memory-limit equation to cap workers. For example, with 32 GiB RAM, 8 GiB used by the main session, and a largest task needing 9.4 GiB, the formula plan(multisession, workers = availableCores(max = (32 - 8) / 9.4)) yields 2 workers — preventing the OS OOM killer from terminating the analysis.
