A philosophical argument that both infrastructure declarations (Terraform/HCL) and agile ceremonies (standups, sprint planning) were scaffolding built to compensate for systems that couldn't observe themselves. Now that AI agents and well-instrumented systems can observe directly, these structures become overhead. The post argues that before removing them, organizations must build the underlying substrate: trust infrastructure, observable state, decision traces, and explicit trust boundaries. The principles behind agile and infrastructure-as-code remain valid — the scaffolding was always just the cost of reaching those principles with limited systems.
