The Threat of Residential Proxies

Residential proxy networks have grown significantly, driven by web scraping demand and AI training needs. These networks are built either through SDK embedding in apps (with dubious user consent) or outright malware preinstalled on cheap consumer devices like digital frames and smart TVs. Victims unknowingly become exit nodes, risking IP reputation damage, bandwidth theft, or even law enforcement attention. Enterprise networks are increasingly affected — Infoblox reports 65% of their customers have traffic going to residential proxy networks. Mitigation options include network segmentation at home, protective DNS services in enterprise environments, and traffic monitoring, though no complete solution exists.
